UPDATE: Let's Catch Up!
It's been a while! Let me catch you up on all the things!
Guerilla Opera's 14th season ended in July and was our most successful season ever!
Success, to me, is not filling the biggest halls with the most amount of people. It's supporting the artists I care about, providing an opportunity to practice their art as part of a community, and fostering a culture of abundance, to the best of my ability.
Our 15th Anniversary Season is snowballing. It's our fullest season ever, with live performance and an online series! In under two weeks we move in to the beautiful and historic Old South Meeting House in Boston for ELLIS by Gabriele Vanoni and Ewa Chrusciel, a new opera that bases it's characters from real people that have travelled through Ellis Island in search of new lives.
It's estimated that 40% of American people can trace lineage through the island. Even though my family is Cuban, I discovered that these statistics include me! I learned that a great great grandmother of mine traveled from Spain to the US and was processed through the island before continuing to Cuba!
Aside from live performance, I was thrilled to attend the Regional Dance Development Initiative (RDDI), part of the New England Foundation for the Arts National Dance Project, as a faculty mentor. I'm a huge proponent for artist exchange. There is so much that we can learn from each other and it reminds me that we are a part of a larger arts culture that feeds the human spirit.
Some studio albums dropped that I recorded during the pandemic with PARMA Recordings with music by composers Carl Vollrath and the late Marvin J. Colton, who passed shortly after the recording of his songs.
I didn't know Marvin well, only through performing his music, but in that time he was enthusiastic, gracious and kind. He posted, “Aliana sang like a goddess. I never imagined that my music could sound this good... Thank you PARMA Recordings for connecting us for this recording. I feel incredibly blessed.” What a kind and generous person. May he rest in peace.
It's my goal this season to be better at updates and my website and all the things we do to keep engaged with each other and our art. Thank you so much for supporting me by following my email updates and social media posts. I'm not a person that likes to do things on my own, so I truly thank you for being on this life journey with me.
